The furniture store has an advertisement in the newspaper of a special sale. A good advertisement attracts by its news value, convinces by its simplicity, and sells by creating desire through common-sense appeal (Walter J. Carlson).

Usage Announcements often contain news of direct or even vital benefit to the hearer or reader, while advertisement suggests the primary motive is to benefit the advertiser, usually by persuading the hearer or reader to part with money.
